The US-China relations are entering a very uncertain phase, to say the least. Other than the trade war, there are many areas in which both countries find themselves in direct competition or rivalry. The US has blamed China for many of these conflicts, such as unfair trade practices, intellectual property theft, predatory economics, territorial expansion, and hegemonic ambitions. However, China disagrees and has its own views. This talk offers from a Chinese perspective the origins and causes of the current tensions in the US-China relations, and how to move forward.
About the Speaker: Dr. RUAN Zongze has been associated with CIIS since 1988. He was a visiting scholar at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London from 1992 to 1993. From 1996 to 2000, he served in the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom as Second Secretary and later First Secretary. He was appointed as the Vice President of CIIS in 2002. From July 2007 to December 2011, Dr. Ruan served in the Chinese Embassy in the United States as Minister Counselor. Currently, he is Executive Vice President and a senior research fellow at CIIS. He is also editor-in-chief of the CIIS journal –China International Studies,and member of the UNDP Human Development Report Advisory Panel.
Dr. Ruan received his doctorate in international relations from China Foreign Affairs University in 2005. He enjoys special allowance from the Chinese Central Government.
